To see more fine oceanic artefacts. This is a stunning well carved and Yena Stick Nukuma Mask from the Kwoma Waskuk East Sepik region of Papua New Guinea. This raw organic well carved Yena Stick Nukuma Mask is extremely well carved with a deep concave facial plane, sharp features with a bird figure at the top (likely a hornbill) and is of classical form. This is a fine old figure of far higher quality than is usually found and is truly a museum quality organic piece. The estimated age of the piece is between 1960s to 1970s. The Kwoma and Nukuma people live in the foothills rising above Ambunti. Like the Abelam people, they pursue a way of life centred on the Yam cult. While the Abelam do all they can to grow the individual yam roots as long as possible - the longest being 4m long - the Kwoma and Nukuma create huge piles of yam tubers and adorn these mounds with Yena stick masks, arranging them on the mound as they would an altar.
Has had a small repair to beak of hornbill but not noticeable. This is a stunning collectors piece.
