Stunning Old Moka Kina Pectoral, Gogodala, Western Gulf, Papua New Guinea, PNG
To see more fine oceanic artefacts. This is a beautiful old chest ornament from the Gogodala region of Papua New Guinea. This pectoral chest ornament would complete a Papua New Guinea man's Breastplate made from a kina shell mounted on a board of resin coated in ochre and decorated with tally stick and fibre band. The resin embedded Moka would take place only after the Moka ceremony and then the red coloring would be applied. The Kina Shell was an object of value and an essential part of the bride price. The value is judged by the condition of the shell, the size and the color. Clan Moka ceremonies where exchanges made to bind the friendships or solidarity of neighboring clans. This would be a prestige piece worn at gatherings of the clans. These ceremonies and festivals a Big Man organized with the help of his clan, and then another group was presented with Kina shells or pigs. Moka were a means to increase the prestige of a Big Man. This Moka Kina Shell is magnificent. Ensure your Moka Kina is kept out of hot areas or direct sunlight or the resin may melt.
This rare piece was collected by the Brennan family who were living and working for a large oil company in the 70s and 80s in Port Moresby now living in Australia. Estimated age is between the 1960s to 1970s. A stunning museum quality collector piece.
